There’s a great line from “Raiders Of The Lost Ark” about Americans “…always overdressed and for the wrong occasions”. That’s your basic Republican yahoo. Wearing masks as they storm the capitol because they’re hiding their criminality. Meanwhile, in Naples, Florida, white privilege will NOT be masked! Republicans are what happens when greed convinces you that freedom equals “you’re not the boss of me”. It’s what happens when you’ve committed yourself lock, stock and barrel to denying the future by force-marching the entire culture (the overwhelming majority of Americans) literally at gun point into the past. Donald Trump didn’t change the Republican Party. He didn’t force them down a road they would never have travelled otherwise. Trump was a catalyst. He was the charisma the GOP needed to get people to look past their deplorable plans for America to a jingly-jangly set of MAGA keys. But, even as the Republican Party accepted Trump as their standard bearer back in 2016, they did it KNOWING he was a traitor.
Let’s get this straight — this is about Russia. It has always been about Russia. Russia, Russia, RUSSIA.
Every bit of obstruction of justice the Trumps, their enablers, their party played, was meant to cover up a secret that everyone already knows (but, apparently, not enough of us refuse to accept still): Donald Trump is a fully owned asset of Russian Military Intelligence. He has been for years. Everything he did upon entering the White House diminished America to Russia’s advantage. Who knows if we have any secrets left. There is a monster reveal coming at us: the entire Trump presidency from its swearing in onward was a massive crime scene and an act of treason.
Conspiracy spreads easily. The meeting was recorded. There’s no arguing about what was said. The question is: who in the room already knew “Russia pays Rohrbacher and Trump?” Did any of them also know that Putin paid quite a few other Republicans, too? Did they suspect — even just a “soupcon”? If they did — and they didn’t tell someone — they committed a crime. It’s that simple. How many Republicans KNEW the truth about Trump? How many suspected — even in a small, seemingly insignificant way? With conspiracy, ownership is easy. Plenty of co-conspirators don’t actually know that that’s what they are — a co-conspirator in a crime — until it’s too late.
With conspiracy, you don’t have to know anything about the crime itself to be held criminally responsible for it. You don’t even have to suspect there was criminality involved. Conspiracy moves between people like a virus, sometimes spreading silently. Tacit understanding of a thing is still understanding that it “is”. So, why didn’t YOU pick up the damned phone and call the damned FBI?
You can flea bathe a dog. Stick a flea collar on a cat or (if you’re brave) stick a pill down its throat and voila! No fleas. Now you can lie down said dog (or cat) problem-free! Not so easy with a Republican however. There’s no way to rinse off the stink of corruption. We may have caught what the Republicans have just from thinking about them — that’s how deep the rot is.
Even among themselves, Republicans are so corrupt — and so afraid of each others’ corruption that they took a secret vote on whether or not to kick Lynn Cheney from power. The Republicans said one thing out loud (she has to go!) but something different when anonymous. That, right there, is the very essence of modern republicanism: duplicity, dishonesty and dickishness.
To stand with Marjorie Taylor Greene is to stand — proudly — with racism, anti-Semitism, authoritarianism, sedition, treason, lunacy and bullshit (not necessarily in that order). Silence is tacit approval. You might as well get in the shot. Smile pretty for the camera!
The photo Republicans like Taylor Greene will be posing for shortly will be a booking photo. That’s the answer to the question — what you’ll get if you lie down with Republicans: you will get booked.
From the second Donald Trump first stole the presidency in 2016, the only remedy available to We The People was going to be We The People. Barack Obama pretty much told us that in his farewell speech. As we speak nearly 100 million Americans have voted already. Considering how apathetic most Americans are come election time? That’s not insignificant.
Maybe being at war has inspired us to take our most sacred right as citizens more seriously. On the one hand, there’s the cyber war that Russia launched against us. On the other, there’s the Culture War launched by the snowflakey right wing against the diverse rest of us. Seeing all those Americans lining up to vote gives me hope — and it’s proving Obama right.
If I go back and look at things I prognosticated before Trump was elected (going back to Facebook posts and tweets and blog posts), I’ll admit: I was wrong about Trump. I wasn’t wrong about what he would do, I was wrong about how completely he’d get away with what he was doing.
I was wrong about Trump lasting four years. I did not see that. I did not see him pulling us out of the Paris Accords or treating Kim Jong-Un like a brother. I didn’t see him betraying the Kurds or opening vast tracts of the Arctic to pollution.
I figured, by the time he got around to that stuff? He’d be gone.
I was wrong, you see, about the complicity of the people around him. It never occurred to me that the entire Republican Party would close ranks around Trump entirely out of party loyalty — in the face of the fact that he is a clear and present danger.
That’s not ME talking, that’s David Laufman, Former chief of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division’s Counter Intel & Export Control Section (that’s how real and technical this guy is):
This is not an ordinary election between two competing political sides. Victory by one side will result in a very different America from what will result — sorry, what could happen — should the other side claim and get to experience their victory.
In 2016, don’t forget, the majority of Americans voted against Trump but got Trump anyway! It feels kinda… un-democratic. In fact, it feels kinda suspect — especially considering as the majority — by a lot — voted for the diametric opposite of what we’re living through.
That’s the thing — while life may appear to go on should Trump “win”, that will only be on the surface. And for some. For others, life stopped going on the moment Trump “won” the first time. For plenty of people, life began to stop. Literally.
Pandemics are not political. Why is ours? Oh, right…
The problem is, Trump did not “win” the 2016 election. We still need to deal with that fact; in fact, Trump’s illegitimacy is at the heart of the question we’re asking today — or the predictions we’re making.
In one sense, every American presidency is like a four-year story cycle with that president as the story cycle’s hero. If we like the story cycle (and the hero), we’ll put our money down for a sequel. If we don’t, we’ll start a new story cycle with a new hero.
Some of us understood what the Donald Trump story cycle was really about from the get-go: corruption. His “politics” have been all over the place because he’s not a political creature. He’s a guy looking to make a deal and if being a Democrat in NYC makes dealmaking easier than Trump’s not just a Democrat, he’s the most passionate pro-abortion Democrat of all! Trump’s not political. He’s flat out cynical. He thinks everyone else is as corrupt as he is.
If only Democrats were accusing the Trump admin of corruption, an argument could be made that the accusation was political in nature. But, there’s the Lincoln Project. And a growing list of other Republicans — politicians, public servants and military people — who have come out and openly stated that they are voting for Joe Biden as should you because Trump’s so corrupt. This list is amazingly long!
When literally hundreds of important, knowledgeable people from Trump’s own political party openly speak of how dangerous he is to the republic itself, I’d say that deserves our attention.
This is not an ordinary election. The choice isn’t between two variations on a theme. It’s between two diametric opposites. With very real consequences for either side when the other side wins.
Very, very real consequences will ensue.
The best indicator of future events is past events. When humans consistently behave a certain way in the past, we can make an informed guess about their future behavior. A person with a history of getting violent when triggered in the past will probably get violent when triggered in the future (unless he does something to stop it). If we can’t assess future risk based on the past, we’re left to face the future blind.
It comes down to what we KNOW empirically based on the past.
Part of our problem with Donald Trump — and predicting what he’ll do — is that our idea of him is tainted by television. An awful lot of Trump’s voters voted for him because they believe to this day that Trump IS the character he played on The Apprentice. Except he’s not. Trump the “master negotiator” and “great businessman” was an invention of Mark Burnett’s.
Master negotiators and great businessmen don’t declare bankruptcy as many times as Trump has — and they don’t owe over a billion dollars — AS TRUMP DOES — a fact he does not deny!
Before I make my predictions, one story. From the moment the Steele Dossier first came to life, everyone around Trump worked overtime to trash its credibility. The news media never understood it in its proper context — it’s raw intelligence data.
Let’s be clear: Steele’s work product has proven to be almost (not entirely) accurate. There are still questions about it but the overwhelming majority of Steele’s observations and notes pan out or have since panned out.
First, you have to understand how the dossier came to be in order to understand what it is and why it’s important.
During the 2016 primaries, the owners of the Washington Free Beacon, a conservative newspaper, hired Fusion GPS to do oppo research work on Donald Trump. The Beacon’s owners were Jeb Bush supporters and they wanted dirt on Trump.
Fusion was a research firm co-created by Glenn Simpson, a journalist who’d written most recently for the Wall Street Journal (hardly a bastion of liberal idealism). When hauled before the Senate Judiciary Committee in August 2017 (the Republican-led committee was trying to undermine the dossier’s integrity), Simpson testified that, having gotten the assignment from the Free Beacon, the first thing Fusion did was its “due diligence”.
They got their hands on every piece of publicly available material about Trump. They got newspaper clippings, books and magazine articles. They watched every video they could find, every radio show interview he did. They went to Amazon and actual book stores. They even went to the public library so as to exhaustively find every piece of publicly available material — just so they’d have a STARTING PLACE on Trump to work from.
And their STARTING PLACE, Simpson testified, was the absolute certainty that Trump had used his (now bankrupt) Atlantic City casinos to launder copious amounts of Russian mob money. In order to answer that question (and other questions about Trump’s strange relationships over the years with shadowy Russians), Fusion sub-contracted out the work to Christopher Steele, former head of the MI6’s Russia desk (MI6 is Britain’s CIA). Steele had the best contacts inside Russia bar none.
The dossier is simply Steele using his sources to provide a picture of all the intel currently floating around inside Russia about Trump — and his relationship with the country’s leaders. And its criminals — since, really, Russia is run by criminals.
Okay, okay — I’m getting there!
My predictions come loaded down with baggage — they’re informed by a lot of reading. There are journalists and other informed writers of this story who’ve brought remarkable insight to how I see what’s happening here: Sarah Kendzior, Seth Abramson, Rachel Maddow, Nicolle Wallace (Sarah Palin’s former handler!), Andrew Weissman, Mary Trump and Glenn Simpson himself (in Crime In Progress, his book about the Steele Dossier and Fusion’s own investigation of Trump).
Another thing I got wrong: like many people, I thought somewhere between Robert Mueller and the FBI, there was an ongoing counterintelligence investigation that was going to connect all the dots between Trump and Russia. We learned recently however that assistant AG Rod Rosenstein, a Trump supplicant, told Team Mueller to stay in the Wikileaks lane. They were under the impression that the FBI was handling the counterintel op. But Rosenstein never told the FBI to pursue the counterintel op. Deliberately.
In other words, the most important investigation into what happened behind the scenes in 2016 to explain the strange relationship between Team Trump and Russia never happened. Those questions remain unanswered though they must be asked.
Let’s remember something: Donald Trump was impeached for cheating in the very election he’s running in. And the thing he was impeached for was cheating in THIS election the same way he cheated in the last election.
That is my starting point. This is not an election between two political ideologies.
It is between right and wrong (let’s avoid good v evil, wink-wink).
I’m not alone in thinking this. The most prominent, forceful, brutally honest voice in the pre-election mix just might belong to THE LINCOLN PROJECT.
The Lincoln Project is made up of Republicans (some now former Republicans) including George Conway (Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway’s HUSBAND!), Rick Wilson & Steve Schmidt — John McCain’s campaign manager. These are serious Republicans. Patriotic Americans. Good people. Good people with whom people on the left disagree politically. But we can all live with that because good people can argue amongst themselves and find compromises they all hate equally. The stone cold truth is: the left needs the balance of the right as surely as the right needs the balance of the left. Our success does indeed lie somewhere in the middle.
To get there from where we are — swinging violently to the right against the majority’s will — to where we need to be — a more moderate “center” — requires more than just a jerk to the center. That’s not what’s coming. And a jerk to the far left is coming. The Lincoln Project Team understand that.
This is from THEIR mission statement: “We do not undertake this task lightly nor from ideological preference. Our many policy differences with national Democrats remain. However, the priority for all patriotic Americans must be a shared fidelity to the Constitution and a commitment to defeat those candidates who have abandoned their constitutional oaths, regardless of party. Electing Democrats who support the Constitution over Republicans who do not is a worthy effort.”
Further, their web site states: “… sectionalism in the country and factionalism in government has led to ever uglier examples of how our political system is failing. President Donald Trump and those who sign onto Trumpism are a clear and present danger to the Constitution and our Republic. Only defeating so polarizing a character as Trump will allow the country to heal its political and psychological wounds and allow for a new, better path forward for all Americans.”
The have produced some breathtakingly brutal ads that point directly at their problem with Trump and Trumpism: it’s sheer immorality.
Remember as you watch — this is Republicans addressing what other Republicans have done. They’re advising the undecided to vote for Joe Biden not for political reasons but for moral ones.
I repeat: though I have deep and profound issues with Trump politically, my deepest issue with him transcends politics completely. My core issue with Donald Trump (as candidate and now as president) has always been with his total lack of moral character. His sexism. His constant houndogging outside his marriage. His blatant racism. His creepy sexuality toward his own daughter. It almost doesn’t matter what the man’s politics are. Even if I agreed with his politics, I’d object to him as a human being. I am not alone in feeling this way.
I believe (based on copious receipts provided by good, competent, genuine journalists) that Trump and those around him knowingly committed multiple crimes in order to “win” election 2016. One of the protections Trump is hiding behind is that DoJ rule that says you can’t indict a sitting president. THAT is what Trump must avoid at all costs: being indicted.
That’s what every republican has to avoid — the legal consequences of their criminal actions up till now.
You have to have this in your mind when you turn to the future — and what will happen should Trump “win”.
Trump won’t “win”. He literally can’t. He literally never did.
The only way Trump “wins” this election is because he’s stolen it. Again. Trump has no intention of governing this country in the way it was designed to be governed. He and his party are actively engaged in preventing other Americans from voting — because they don’t want those Americans to vote them out of office.
Sorry, that’s not how this country works. Not THIS country, not yet.
This desperation speaks to what will happen when We The People (not the Democrats or Joe Biden) throw Donald Trump and a huge swath of the Republican Party out of power. People are coming out to vote who have never voted before. Young people are voting as never EVER before — and they’re voting, most of them, in one direction: for something and against the other — because of what the other is and not because of its politics.
Donald Trump will get blown out by the biggest margin ever. More Americans will vote in this election than, perhaps in any other election ever. That’s for a reason: the overwhelming majority of Americans are done, done, DONE w Donald Trump and what he’s doing to America.
Joe Biden will win handily. The Democrats will increase their lead in the House and they will flip the Senate. Then, here is what (I predict) they will do
The Democrats will increase the size of the Supreme Court — from 9 seats to 13 or 15 at a minimum in order to make the SCOTUS look more like We The People and less like just one segment of our population.
The Democrats will make Puerto Rico and Washington DC states — giving them two Senators each — helping to bring some balance back to the Senate and how it “represents” Americans and their interests.
The pandemic (as much as the Democrats) will make socialized medicine and universal basic income done deals. They’ll launch a massive infrastructure project even bigger than Roosevelt’s WPA — all in order to help get the economy out of the ditch it’s in — the ditch Trump and his coronavirus response put us and the economy in.
As Joe Biden said, it won’t be up to him what “happens” to any Republican who might have behaved illegally over the last four years, it will be up to a newly rejuvenated Department of Justice — as per our Constitution and the rule of law. If the rule of law dictates the Justice be visited upon all the Republicans now fallen from power then so be it. They knowingly violated the rule of law which is what brought us here. Behold The Day Of Judgment.
In neither case will life go on as it was.
Life will go on but we are about to experience the kind of profound political and social change that followed the Black Death. In the same way that bubonic plague ended feudalism, the coronavirus pandemic will undermine crony capitalism and usher in a more socialistic approach to life and governance.
Having turned in a (not unexpected) horrible performance at the first presidential debate, Donald Trump ducked the second debate (that is what he effectively did) by refusing to address his own diseased status. That’s the headline here, NBC News: Donald Trump is diseased. And not just with coronavirus. He’s decimated every bit of our whole way of doing things — in large part because YOU (and the rest of the news media) have, to this day, refused to hold Donald Trump accountable for any of the overtly criminal, deceitful acts we’ve watched him perpetrate right in our faces.
The Republican Party is waging a culture war on the rest of America — and YOU continue to carry its water. Donald Trump continues to tell YOU you’re full of shit while YOU put his shit on the air often without contextualizing his shit as shit. And you look at yourselves in the mirror…
Now, in your defense, at least you now say openly that Trump is, on average, a liar. But you don’t behave as if that means anything to you. Though you know the odds are what Trump says is a lie, you still present it, first, as if it “might” be true. In other words — right off the bat, sight unseen, you are giving bullshit all the credence of Truth. Or, as you call it, the benefit of the doubt.
The benefit of the doubt is a “But, what if bullshit was true…?” question. What if pigs could fly. What if the Pope did shit in the woods? What if Donald Trump could declare himself emperor for life? The moment you give bullshit credence, you make bullshit results possible. That’s what happens when un-reason triumphs over reason. That never works out in the end.
America is more polarized than ever in part because corruption is rarely if ever held accountable. That’s happened in part because our news media sees everyone they cover in cynical terms. Everyone’s a cartoon character who acts exactly the same regardless of whether they’re Democrat or Republican. Oh, the Democrats might say they want to make peoples’ lives better but they’re no different from the Republicans who just want to get rich and keep power in the hands of white people. See? They even sound the same.
Who does NBC News thinks is going to watch Donald Trump tonight? Trust me, NBC News — people who hate Donald Trump (and, right now, people are willing to wait in line 12 hours to vote Trump out) are not going to tune in to you tonight. If they do, it’s because you’ve done and are doing the nation — and our democracy — a gross disservice. Donald Trump doesn’t want to stand toe-to-toe with Joe Biden because he can’t. Rather than expose that weakness (something one would think a news operation would WANT to do), you’ve allowed Trump to have his forum all to himself.
Please don’t ask us to trust you — that you will hold Trump’s feet to the fire when he refuses to answer anyone’s question. You haven’t done it for four years. You’re not starting now. You’re not.
Some ideas (“Manimal” comes to mind) should die on the vine.
This bit of “counter programming” was one of them. This isn’t just a bad idea, NBC News, it’s the kind that harms a news organization’s integrity — and (after the way you’ve handled sexual assault allegations inside your ranks) your integrity wasn’t exactly healthy. Never mind how angry some of us are today. Surely you can think longer term than that.
America is going through a massive sea change in its political culture. Women and people of color are taking the power they deserved to have eons ago. The truth is, we’ve never had a level playing field here. Before we can really be the country we aspire to be, we need to address that. Now that so many of us have come out to vote — to hold political power in our hands — more of us will recognize that democracy works only when we make it work. And we will work to make it work.
There’s a circle of fire ahead. The process of rooting out the corruption that nearly destroyed us will be brutal. It has to be. Just as you can’t compromise with evil, nor can you compromise with corruption. The act of compromising immediately corrupts you. One of the questions we’ll have to ask is how did corruption come so close to overwhelming us? Where were the critical voices that should have guarded the commonweal more vigilantly?
When that question comes up, all eyes will look to our news media.
There’s no similar string of corruption on the Democratic Party’s side: Watergate… Iran-Contra… The Iraq War… Trump-Russia-Trump-Ukraine (it’s the same thing). It’s not because the Democrats aren’t “creative” enough. They’re plenty creative. They just spend most of THEIR creativity on improving the Commonweal, not raping & pilaging it like pirates at a free-for-all.
Both sides do not abuse power the way Republicans do. In fact, both sides do not abuse power. The reason Republicans impeached Bill Clinton wasn’t because he was abusing power. Ironically, that’s what the Republicans were doing — going after Clinton because of a blow job. The American People got it then just like we’re getting it now.
Republicans must abuse power in order to keep power. They’d try to hold onto power using the value of their ideas but — even they know that’s a non-starter. Gerrymandering is an abuse of power. It’s the minority abusing power to disempower the majority so that the majority can’t express its voice. Voter suppression is even more flagrant abuse of power. It only works for the powerful, ya see? It’s impossible for the powerless to do the same thing to the powerful.
Republicans are keenly aware of the demographic handwriting on the wall. By 2050, estimates say, white people will officially be a minority in America. White people (the conservative Christian ones) have decided they won’t go quietly into minority-hood. They declared culture war on the rest of us — and deliberately set out to hijack our Democratic Republic first by capturing the judiciary. You can see Moscow Mitch McConnell hard at work cramming unqualified but ideologically compliant baby conservatives info lifetime appointments Mitch flat out denied President Obama.
Apparently in an election year, it’s up to We The People to, um, decide who we want as SCOTUS judges (nevermind that we already ELECTED a POTUS to do that very thing). I bet Mitch feels the exact opposite if another opening suddenly appears in 2020.
Republicans abuse power like the rest of us breathe.
We all know what Trump and the Republicans are up to — the ultimate abuse of power — permanent one-party (the minority party) rule.
It’s Christmas and Republicans hope like hell that that’s what they find under the tree. It’s incumbent on We The People to make sure Mitch and his fellow travelers find only coal in their stockings.
It’s true. Pikesville, MD (just outside northwest Baltimore) was so predominantly Jewish that clever (non-Jewish) people called it ‘Kikesville’. Get it?
My public high schools — Pikesville Junior High & Pikesville Senior High — were so predominantly Jewish that even the non-Jewish kids took the Jewish holidays off because they knew — school was going to be a ghost town. Virtually all of my friends were Jewish (not all but close to it). We tribalized inside the bubble based on which of the major synagogues your family belonged to. Most of us were reformed or conservative Jews. The orthodox among us were the outliers. Wait — you don’t eat steamed crabs? What the hell is wrong with you?
In Baltimore, there was a strong Irish Catholic presence. Evangelicals hadn’t taken hold yet so the Mainstream Protestant pool was bigger. Most Protestants aren’t WASPS. WASPS aren’t just followers of some variation of the Protestant faith, in their minds, they’re its originators — their families go that far back. WASPS are as insulated a culture as Jews can be with one huge difference. Lots of Jews seek to assimilate. WASPS don’t ever. To them, they’re the thing everyone else wants to assimilate INTO. To them, they are the Gold Standard. They ARE White Culture.
My closest brush with WASPs & WASP culture was when I got accepted to the Gilman School — where some of Baltimore’s WASPiest WASPS sent their progeny. I begged my parents not to send me. Gilman was an all-boys school (a very, very GOOD school) and that seemed an impossibility to me. I wanted to take my chances with public school like all of my friends (fortunately for me, the Baltimore County School System was pretty good). WASPs were an alien culture to me even then.
When I arrived at Vassar College, WASPS were among the first shocks to my system. We’re not talking big, knock-you-on-your-ass shocks, we’re talking ‘the-world’s-more-complicated-than-you-thought’ shocks.
Quick sidenote: The other culture I ran into that shocked me as I had NO concept of it whatsoever was California Culture. My first college gf was from Marin County and her wild high school escapades were actual wild high school escapades with naked hot tub parties and drug dealers that made our high school escapades look… well, like high school escapades.
WASPS did everything differently. They thought about food differently for instance. If my housemates and I were throwing a party (I lived off campus most of my time at Vassar), the Jews in the house always overbought food while the WASPS always overbought liquor. Who cared if there was nothing to eat so long as the booze kept flowing. THAT was foreign.
WASPS prayed differently, of course. And they spoke differently. They stood differently and engaged with you differently. In ‘Annie Hall’, Woody Allen nailed the differences between WASP families and Jewish families perfectly with a split screen of two families (one each) at dinner. The WASPS are all very well-mannered, quiet, always speaking in turn while the Jewish family talks over each other like a tic. Something of that deep-seated English fear of embarrassment remains at the core of most WASPs.
Being an outsider, I found WASP culture fascinating — especially its latent (as opposed to its blatant) Antisemitism. The Catholic Church’s history of Jew-hating was a flashing electronic billboard of cruelty, brutality and blood lust. WASPs on the other hand — at least where I grew up — kept their Antisemitism a little cleaner. It was so hard-wired into their culture that you could miss it. But it’s there — even with your friends.
Look — we’re tribal creatures, every last one of us. Strange as it may sound, I don’t mind my friends being Antisemitic if, at least, they own that it’s there in their makeup. Jews making jokes about Jews is one thing. Someone else making jokes about Jews — just cos they can count Jews among their bff’s — that’s always going to be a dicey, ‘it was in the tone of my voice’ proposition.
After college I shared a cute little carriage house in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn with two dear friends, both WASPs. A few days after I moved in, we had an Easter party for lots of our friends — and I made the ham. I was genuinely touched when my two WASP friends and housemates praised my Easter ham for its authenticity.
I had assimilated successfully into them, you see — at least, as far as I was going to be allowed to assimilate…
There are times — at the beginnings of wars usually — when one side knows a state of war exists while the other side doesn’t. Pearl Harbor comes to mind.
On the morning of December 7, 1941, the residents of Hawaii — Pearl Harbor in particular — slept soundly in their beds, unaware that they were moments away from being bombed, strafed, shot at and in every way attacked. Japan was at war with them. Japan knew it — they, unfortunately for them, did not.
That’s pretty much how the Left has been reacting to the Culture War the republican party declared not just on the Democratic Party but on the majority of Americans, too. We’ve been almost oblivious to it. We’ve heard the war-like chatter in the background but we’ve never taken it seriously. We damned well better — because the war Newt Gingrich talked his side into launching years ago has finally established significant beachheads in American Culture.
Michelle Cottle nails it: “In his zeal to cripple Democrats, Gingrich poisoned the public against the entire American political system. ”
In Newt’s own words: “You have to confront, delay, and undermine and impose failure in order to move the public.”
Newt made it his absolute goal to impose FAILURE on his perceived enemy — everyone who wasn’t HIM. That included the CULTURE in which the rest of us live.
Right Wing Culture is a lot like what Astrophysicist Neil deGrsse Tyson calls the ‘Diminishing God of the Gaps’ — the place you go to when you reach the end of what you ‘know’. Right Wing culture — once thought to be a significant part of American Culture is now understood to be a fringe element at best (and shrinking rapidly). Right Wing Culture is that thing everyone with a sense of humor laughs at.
It is a fact of life that Right Wing Culture has no sense of humor. Oh, it can laugh all right — at other people. Especially if they’re suffering some sort of misfortune. Then they turn hilarious. Right Wing Culture is sanctimonious. It believes it understands the divine; it believes the divine has chosen it to be its representative here on earth. Right Wing Culture is seriously delusional.
Right Wing Culture honestly believes that IT is American Exceptionalism — that its very whiteness and maleness and Christian-ness is exceptional. It’s wrong of course. America’s DIVERSITY is what makes it EXCEPTIONAL. That kind of broad diversity never happened before in one country. It produced remarkable — no, EXCEPTIONAL — results.
White Christian Male culture is the exact opposite of exceptional. Aside from rage and grievance, it can’t point to a single thing it’s added to the conversation. Being weak and having few weapons at its disposal, White Christian Male Culture counts on drawing us near enough to sneak in a dirty low blow to neutralize us.
They’re going to be disappointed this time. A lot more of us are woke now. We’re paying attention.
And — as much as we can — we’re doing the thing that cuts Trumpists & Religionistas & RW Culture Warriors deepest: We’re laughing at them.
I’m dying to know. Which class is it in America’s Journalism Schools that’s confusing everyone? Which class is instructing American Journalists that if you can’t write anything else, fall back on ‘Well, both sides do it…!’?
Whichever class it is, it’s screwing up American Journalism to the point where American Journalism is HELPING undermine the Republic. ‘Both sides do it’ is literally blinding them to the larger — and far, FAR more important — story.
‘Both Sides Do It’ Journalism accepts that a man stealing a loaf of bread because he’s hungry is the same as an industrialist stealing billions from the commonweal. Yes — both men are thieves. BOTH SIDES DO IT.
But there’s a difference of scale between them, yeah? Stealing a loaf of bread and stealing billions are both thievery but aside from that abstract fact, there’s not an iota of similarity. And while you could say ‘BOTH SIDES DO IT’ — it doesn’t exactly capture ‘The Truth’. In fact, it perverts the Truth.
That’s what ‘Both Sides Do It’ instantly eschews: Scale… Proportion… Context. It’s a headline that doesn’t actually match the story.
As we head toward an election that will absolutely decide this country’s fate, the American News Media is taking ‘Both Sides Do It’ Journalism to bold new heights.
Today’s ‘It’ — Enthusiasm. Both sides have enthusiasm. Yes, they do. But the ‘nature’ of that enthusiasm — that’s actually the story. People who want to restrict rights have one sort of ‘enthusiasm’ and people whose rights are about to be restricted — they experience a whole ‘other’ kind of ‘enthusiasm’. Theirs is existential. The other is merely cruel and mired in fear of the ‘other’. It’s Lizard Brain thinking (as it were).
When you report them as being the same — it distorts everything about the story. It screws with the Truth. It’s not far enough away to be dismissed out of hand, but it’s close enough to blur reality in peoples’ minds. Damage done.
When you approach every story already fixated on the false narrative that whatever crime one side does, the other is matching it step for step. The most painful example remains every time a ‘serious’ news media outlet hosts a panel discussion about Climate Change and they invite a Climate Change Denier to sit in on the panel.
Television — this is not a revelation — is a mostly visual medium. How you see things is key to how you perceive them. When a news outlet splits a screen 50-50, the inherent message is “These Two Sides Are Equal” (by the same token if they squeezed those screens to represent reality — perhaps that would be a genius way to faithfully represent how arguments compare). When a Climate Scientist shares a 50-50 screen with a Denier — the two are given equal weight, as are their arguments. Science gets diminished while bullshit gains credibility. That can’t possibly end well.
But that, too, is part of ‘Both Sides Do It’. It slides easily into false narratives because it starts from such a distorted place. Once False Narratives get launched, they take on a life of their own. The Truth gets harder to discern from all the bullshit surrounding it.
After a while — as we have now — American Journalists start out from a ‘Both Sides Do It’ perspective. They fail to see any sort of proportionality. A candidate who equivocates about a senate vote becomes the same as a candidate who lies about raping someone. They both failed to tell the Truth. BOTH SIDES DO IT.
No, American News Media — Both Sides DO NOT DO IT.
Both sides DO NOT regularly cheat to win elections.
Both sides DO NOT do not disenfranchise and suppress voters.
Both sides DO NOT ‘knowingly’ accept money from FOREIGN DONORS!
Both sides DO NOT lie with such shocking impunity.
Both sides DO NOT so clearly serve the needs of their White, Wealthy, Christian, Male donors at the expense of every other American.
Both sides DO NOT declare Culture War on other Americans.
Both sides DO NOT commit TREASON to hold onto power.
Decency is now officially as dead as irony. That’s pretty damned dead. In American Politics, Decency died the day Lee Atwater went to work.
Lee Atwater’s the dude on the right — keeping company with Paul Manafort & Roger Stone. During the 1980’s & 1990’s, Atwater ran campaigns for Ronald Reagan & George Bush before running the RNC. Atwater didn’t invent dirty, malicious politics in America but he turned them from gamesmanship into brinkmanship. He had no interest in compromise. None.
Newt Gingrich picked up the mantle when cancer took a bite out of Atwater (though I bet cancer wished almost immediately it could spit Atwater out).
Newt turned Atwater’s political war against the Left into an all out Culture War. We have not been the same since.
When you choose not to compromise with someone, you cease having to communicate with them — except to tell them what you expect to DO to them. It’s an aggressive act — cutting off effective communication with someone. It’s a not-so-subtle declaration of War. Culture War. Political War.
It flows: When you see yourself in a perpetual state of war, the people opposing you are your enemy — even if they’re your countrymen and they simply see a different way of solving the Nation’s many problems. Decent people don’t see people they disagree with as their enemy deserving of cultural death.
But Newt did. As did Lee.
Paul Manafort and Roger Stone — friends of Lee’s — went to work for Donald J Trump. We all know where he stands vis a vis ‘decency’.
Another of Donald Trump’s mentors of course was Roy Cohn — another member of this despicable club.
And Roy Cohn famously worked for Joe McCarthy. And Joe McCarthy famously got asked the very same question Donald Trump and the whole Republican Party need to be peppered with repeatedly: “At last, sir, have you no DECENCY?”
There’s a phrase I’m fond of saying here: “BACK IT UP OR IT’S BULLSHIT”.
I appreciate that it’s just easier to let other people think for you — especially where the Bigger Questions In Life are concerned. Where did ‘This’ all come from? Why are we here? What is the point?
‘Cos god’ is what Institutional Religion wants you to buy — and they hit you early and hard to make you buy. And, because they’re hitting you early, when you’re a kid, they know you have no capacity to fight back. Or ask a good question or two. Something that might stump them like: “What the hell are you TALKING about?”
Enter the ‘Mumbo Jumbo’… the ‘Ooga Booga’… The MAGICAL THINKING.
What happens when we die? Heaven. Proof of it’s existence? Don’t need proof — faith. Ah — and ‘faith’ in WHAT?
Faith in the Magic. Faith that ‘The Magic’ is real. Based on… nothing. Because there never was anything to back it up.
For a generation now — since Lee Atwater & Newt Gingrich & Karl Rove & everyone who ever worked in the Nixon White House declared open cultural war on Progressive America (AMERICA in other words), actual data to back up and justify their policy initiatives and the direction they wanted to take America were totally non-existent. But MAGICAL THINKING was suddenly available in abundance.
Liberated from having to actually BACK UP their claims, republicans and conservatives went hog wild — trickling down all kinds of bullshit on the heads of the American People. Bullshit is like a booby trapped toy dropped into a war zone. It looks so innocent when you pick it up — and then it ‘explodes’ inside your head. Coat the Truth in enough lies often enough and the lie begins to cover up the Truth completely.
The story of how marijuana was ‘illegalized’ in this country comes to mind. And while I’m at it, let me do a little cross pollenization —
Inevitably, Magical Thinkers legislate their Magical Thinking onto the rest of us. We find ourselves subjected to laws and rules that WE KNOW are based on bullshit. And we look around at each other and we wonder — how the hell did THE MAJORITY of Americans end up HERE — where BULLSHIT (Magical Thinking) gets taken seriously while The Truth gets tossed aside?
Bullshit — and those who deal in it — count on their bullshit causing confusion and disrupting logic.
Donald J Trump comes to mind, strangely…
Good thing the cure isn’t hard to find or take: Read. Learn. Analyze. Question. Back It Up.
Ya have to give the Republican Party full bonus points for having ‘Clarity’. They know EXACTLY the ‘kind of America’ they want our country to be. Too bad it’s 1850 America.
The republican party aspires to live in a White, Christian, Male Dominated World.
Demographics do not line up with that world any more. They never actually lined up back in the day. Maybe that’s why ‘certain people’ were considered only ‘3/5 of a person’.
Literally EVERYTHING the Kochs & the Mercers have paid huge money for would FIX America in a perverse hybrid world that ‘lives’ in 1950 but wishes it were 1850 — complete with slavery. Republicans want the rich to get richer and everyone else to get poorer — approaching a kind of economic slavery where our function is to produce goods we can no longer afford to buy ourselves.
Beyond that however is the CULTURE WAR declared principally by the Anti-Abortionists for whom ‘Life’ is sacred only in the abstract. Their single-minded loathing of women’s vaginas and reproductive organs has reached a state of virtual & perpetual psychosis.
Mitch McConnell’s whole power grab — the denial of Merrick Garland and, now, the rush to fill Justice Kennedy’s ‘sudden’ vacancy (this story is going to get ugly, uglier, ugliest) — was centered on filling as many SCOTUS seats as he could (ditto as many other judgeships.) And the goal of that is to outlaw abortion, birth control, immigration by un-white people and on and on and on.
Where abortion is concerned, the intent is to throw it to the states so that each state would have its own birth control rules & regs (the ultimate, ultimate goal is to turn EVERY state into a replica of Salem, circa 1600 where women know their place and keep to their place). But, before we get to Salem 1600, we’ll go through a long, tortured patch where some states have kept abortion legal while others haven’t. Women NEEDING abortions in the anti-abortion states will head to the nearest state where their HEALTH CARE NEEDS and their decision to be or NOT BE a parent can be answered in the way that best suits THEM.
This cultural division of course will go far, far beyond just abortion and birth control. Repressive, Chritian-ized States will experience an extreme Brain Drain. It’s a ‘no-brainer’.
States on that side of the cultural divide will put creationism in their science classrooms — exactly like they’ve dreamed of doing. Creationism in a science classroom will NOT produce science students who can complete in the Real World. Rather it will produce fools, Magical Thinkers and incompetents. The people who pass through its doors will be set up for failure. And fail they will — as will their states — from top to bottom.
Want a little taste of it? Look at the ‘Kansas Miracle’.
Within a generation, there WILL be Two Distinct Americas — the one that lives up to its promise and produces greatness because that’s what diversity does.
The other country will look a lot like the very shit hole countries a certain president loves to call out — while doing everything in his corrupt power to turn US into THAT.
